I just stumbled on Kivi Leroux Miller’s “Freelance Writing for Nonprofits” blog and found a post that nicely illustrates one of my oft-repeated points.
Instead of taking whatever work comes down the pike, target the companies and markets you want to work for.
From Kivi’s blog:
It was yet another reminder to me to be thankful that I work as a full-time freelancer doing the kind of writing I truly enjoy. Sure, there are some assignments from nonprofit clients that I slog through, but for the most part, I really do like writing newsletter articles, web content, annual reports, etc. I love helping nonprofits tell their stories.
I’m all for the happy accident–and the joy of learning new things from unexpected clients–but I’m also someone who believes a little passion for your work is essential if you want to be writing a couple decades from now.
A great way to ensure that is to write about things you’re passionate about–like Kivi, who’s clearly found a home with non-profits.
What’s your passion? Will you be writing about it next week?

Thanks for the kind words, Tom.
