Time tracking tools are one of the essential tools to use by freelancers. I also use Rescuetime before and it work quit very well. It helps me manage time effectively. It is simple and easy to use; it won’t take you too much time to effectively use it. When successfully installed it silently runs on the background of the computer with no data entry needed. However, there is something that is lacking with this tool and it cannot tracks time spend on separate tasks. I also read this article that discusses comparative reports about Rescuetime and an alternative tool. You can check it here: http://www.timedoctor.com/blog/2010/07/25/how-is-time-doctor-different-than-rescue-time

Anything that doesn't further your writing output -- including complex accounting schemes -- probably isn't the best thing for a freelancer. Life's too short to spend it pushing a spreadsheet.

I like simple forms too. Quickbooks, though very good at keeping up with everything, is far too much work for a part time freelancer and for a really busy freelancer.

Not only is this great for tracking your jobs, but it can be applied to nearly everything as a handy way to keep track of how your time is spend (and look for ways to become more efficient with it).

I do all of this in a 8"x10" notebook, and it has all my projects for the last 10 years.

In addition to the info you have in your spreadsheet, I also add the name of the person I worked with, when I requested payment, and when payment arrived.

The payment request and received dates are especially important. I primarily work for college textbook publishers; they always pay, but sometimes I have to prod them to do it. I wait eight weeks after the initial request before sending a reminder.
