Just got off the phone with one of my favorite writers, who is leaving a “regular” job for a return to the freelance writing life. We discussed differentiation, technology, markets, media channels — all the usual hard-bitten (and sometimes cynical) business stuff — but she did an excellent job of driving all that to the margins when she talked about why she was leaving a sometimes-difficult day job for a less-certain future in writing:
“I think I’ll choose happiness.”
Keep writing, Tom Chandler.

Freelancing is so much more exciting than working in a conventional job; sure, you bear the risk of failure on your own back, but you also see all the rewards of success – not just a little slice of it.
It’s a big plunge, but I think it’s well worth it. Of course, only if you’re passionate about what you do – otherwise the little obstacles we have to overcome might seem a lot less insignificant.
Also, who wants a boss?
