It was a messy process, but I just transferred all my domains away from GoDaddy. I feel better already.
Their advertising irritated me and they were on the wrong side of the SOPA thing, and I’m ashamed to admit I wanted to dump them a year ago, but hadn’t.
Revealingly, I didn’t act until I was forced to run their gauntlet of overbearing sales screens one too many times. Even simple acts — like renewing a domain — forced me to scroll through screens of rubbish services just to find the “no thanks” button.
So I could repeat the process on the next screen.
At some point, salesmanship becomes utter disrespect (picture that irritating fool trying to sell you insurance at your kid’s birthday party), and even lazy copywriters with too much on their plate have their limits.
Sell stuff, but don’t be an ass about it. Or, learn from GoDaddy. Don’t be that irritating fool.
Keep writing, Tom Chandler.

Good for you, congrats. And agreed on the salesman at a kid’s birthday party. It’s about pinatas and cake, leave the briefcase in the car.
am similarly fed up with GoDaddy due to the terrible user experience on their website, the SOPA thing, Danica Patrick, and also my experience with their phone support.
However, I renewed my hosting in November, just before I heard about SOPA (which was my tipping point); so unfortunately I am stuck until November. Planning to transfer to HostGator because of its reputation & price but curious what you picked, and why.

Rose: I never hosted a website at GoDaddy, they simply served as my domain registrar, where they managed to complicate a singularly simple job. I moved my domains to NameCheap.com.
I host my websites and a few client sites at Hostgator, whose reseller plans are pretty affordable. I’ve had good luck with the shared service, though things have grown enough that I’m looking at a standalone server.

Thanks!

A few years ago, a nonprofit I volunteered at decided to move their site to GoDaddy. Of the available options, it had the best CBR. It was easy to set up, but *man,* their interface is a disaster. Even routine things were a chore. When I passed the webmaster baton to the next guy, it was with a palpable sense of “good riddance.”
I was going to ask you who you switched to. Clients and friends occasionally ask me for recommendations for domain registrars and web hosts. Would you recommend Hostgator?
I’ve been with Pair Networks for many years, and though they ain’t cheap, their reliability is ironclad (never been down once) and the tech support is exceptional. I found them through MacMedics, which is my favorite local Apple service provider. I figured that any host that was good enough for a bunch of uber-geeks would be more than good enough for me!

I have a Hostgator reseller plan. Overall it’s going well there, no downtime yet, though occasionally you see a slowdown, which is par for the course until you decide to spring for a dedicated server.

mm… Did you know there are thousands of registrars where to look from? Just visit the ICANN’s website and review their list. Sure you will find a few surprises both in price and service.
