Yes, I’ve been away for a bit, but it’s comforting to know the marketing industry has not grown any less sleazy in my absence.
Witness this Craigslist ad from marketing firm Marketopia, which is apparently growing so quickly, they need skilled labor.
Due to rapidly growing demand for our services, Marketopia has a copywriting/PR intern position open in our St. Petersburg office. This resource will work directly for the Chief Marketing Officer to conduct marketing services for our firm and for our clients. This position is unpaid and requires a 3 month or more commitment and at least 15 hours per week.
The ad lists a set of “Desired Competencies” that would do a marketing pro proud, and because true sleaze knows no irony, it also states the company offers “completive (sic) pay and benefits packages designed to attract and retain the best and brightest.”
Unpaid internships aren’t new nor is Marketopia alone in this kind of scam, but even after 30 years in marketing, it’s comforting to know I can still work up a little righteous indignation when confronted by crooks and thieves.
Marketopia, you’ve earned our Saddle Sore of the Month Award.
Keep writing, Tom Chandler.
